{"id":7029,"date":"2026-07-17T13:40:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T13:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetradingdictionary.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/17\/world-cup-boosts-beer-sales-in-englands-pubs-but-some-still-face-last-orders\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T13:40:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T13:40:19","slug":"world-cup-boosts-beer-sales-in-englands-pubs-but-some-still-face-last-orders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetradingdictionary.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/17\/world-cup-boosts-beer-sales-in-englands-pubs-but-some-still-face-last-orders\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cup boosts beer sales in England\u2019s pubs, but some still face last orders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-308e28\" class=\"body-graf\">LONDON \u2014 Scotland fans famously drank Boston dry. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-14b336\" class=\"body-graf\">But while the team\u2019s exploits on the field could not match the success of its supporters, pubs in England \u2014 some of which are struggling financially \u2014 have been boosted by the boon in beer sales from the team\u2019s run to the World Cup semifinals. <\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-35e52e\" class=\"body-graf\">England plays archrival Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday, an 8 p.m. kickoff back home (3 p.m. ET) that will likely see fans flock to pubs across the country hoping to see their team make its first World Cup final in 60 years.    <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9383ce\" class=\"body-graf\">The profit made from the World Cup accounts for around 15% of the annual sales made by the Bread and Cheese pub in Thundersley, a small village around 40 miles east of London, owner Steve Haslam told NBC News in a telephone interview Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-755456\" class=\"body-graf\">He said he expected to make around 7,000 pounds to 9,000 pounds ($9,400 to $12,000) more than the average Wednesday, when England kicks off. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-474505\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">England fans in London celebrate the team&#8217;s quarterfinal win over Norway on Saturday. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Thomas Krych \/ AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-ca675f\" class=\"body-graf\">And his pub is not alone. Around 5.5 million extra pints had been sold during group stages alone, according to UKHospitality, a trade body that represents the country\u2019s hospitality and leisure sector. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-73e5b2\" class=\"body-graf\">Emma McClarkin, the CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, said in an email Tuesday that it expected \u201cWednesday to be the most successful night of the tournament, with more than 6 million extra pints potentially sold,\u201d around a 75% increase on the 8 million pints typically sold on an average Wednesday in July.<\/p>\n<div class=\"styles_recommendedIntersectionRef__vQEf5\" data-activity-map=\"recommended-article-body-for-subscribers\" data-testid=\"recommended-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_recommendedIntersectionRef__vQEf5\" data-activity-map=\"recommended-article-body-for-subscribers\" data-testid=\"recommended-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-672d9c\" class=\"body-graf\">However, figures compiled by her organization and published in May show that 161 pubs across Britain closed between January and March, the equivalent of almost two a day.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7b5a78\" class=\"body-graf\">Overall \u201cmargins are getting squeezed because it is a tough time for pubs right now,\u201d said Haslam, the owner of the Bread and Cheese who is also director of Aim Pubs, a family business that owns eight pubs across the United Kingdom. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-27560a\" class=\"body-graf\">Having initially refused, the government did eventually relent and relax licensing laws for England\u2019s second-round match against Mexico, allowing pubs to stay open until 5 a.m. local time.    <\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-aef009\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">An England fan in Liverpool on Saturday.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Peter Powell \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-889761\" class=\"body-graf\">But both UKHospitality and the British Beer and Pub Association say lawmakers need to do more to protect the industry and blame high business rates and taxes as contributing factors to pub closures. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-221596\" class=\"body-graf\">It\u2019s a view shared by Ash Corbett-Collins, chairman of the Campaign for Real Ale or CAMRA.    <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b5eeae\" class=\"body-graf\">The \u201cgovernment needs to fully recognize the contributions\u202fpubs make to the economy and social well-being of local communities,\u201d he said. \u201cWe risk losing more and more pubs unless\u202fmeaningful support is given.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b27af7\" class=\"body-graf\">Fairer business rates and less tax on food and drink, including beer, would help out, he said. \u201cThe industry can\u2019t rely on a sports tournament every four years to survive,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-92548f\" class=\"body-graf\">A spokesperson for Britain\u2019s Treasury said the government was backing the hospitality industry by cutting taxes \u201con family attractions and kids meals this summer, reforming business rates, extending World Cup opening hours, and taking action on the cost of living to boost the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-3ebc99\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">England&#8217;s Jude Bellingham celebrates after scoring against Norway.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Patricia de Melo Moreira \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-c4b0ac\" class=\"body-graf\">The British government also announced in January that pubs and live music venues would be given a 15% discount on their business rates from April and not see increases for two years.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-42563b\" class=\"body-graf\">The British Beer and Pub Association said that this was \u201cvital, but temporary\u201d but a longer-term plan was required to \u201csave pubs, jobs, and hearts of communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-384d18\" class=\"body-graf\">And Haslam also said that the cut was largely ineffective and that he believed the government should revise the business and other taxes to help out. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-421dcb\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cThe great British pub is the heart of the country. People go to pubs to make memories.
